descriptionAbout this project

What we’re doing

The Evidence-Based Intervention in the African Mining Sector is a multi-country initiative implemented by Dataphyte Foundation in partnership with the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID) under the Just Energy Transition (JET) Minerals initiative, the flagship project of the Countering Transnational Corruption Grand Challenge for Development.

The project focuses on strengthening transparency, accountability, and citizen participation in the governance of critical green minerals across Nigeria, Ghana, Mozambique, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). As demand for minerals such as cobalt, lithium, and rare earth elements increases, the project uses data, civic technology, investigative journalism, and capacity building to identify corruption risks, regulatory gaps, and transparency challenges across the mineral value chain.

Key activities include collecting and aggregating data on mining sites, production, regulations, and sector risks; developing an interactive dashboard hosted on the Udeme social accountability platform; and building the capacity of journalists, civic actors, and anti-corruption stakeholders to use data for investigative reporting, advocacy, and institutional oversight.

Evidence that leads to action

Designed to create practical, accountable, and lasting public value.

01

Improved transparency in the green minerals sector

The project is making critical information on mining sites, production, regulations, and sector risks more accessible to journalists, civil society, regulators, and citizens.

02

Strengthened citizen oversight of mining activities

By providing accessible data and civic technology tools, the project creates opportunities for citizens and civic actors to better understand and scrutinise activities within the mineral value chain.

03

Enhanced evidence-based anti-corruption efforts

The collection and analysis of mining-sector data helps identify potential corruption risks, regulatory gaps, and areas requiring greater institutional oversight.

04

Improved access to mining-sector data

The development of a user-friendly dashboard provides a central platform for visualising and exploring information about green minerals and mining activities across the targeted countries.

05

Strengthened investigative journalism

Journalists across the four countries are being equipped with data and investigative tools to investigate mining-sector practices, uncover risks, and produce evidence-based reporting.

06

Built the capacity of civic and anti-corruption actors

raining strengthened the ability of journalists, civil society organisations, and anti-corruption stakeholders to use data for advocacy, investigations, and institutional engagement.

07

Strengthened cross-country collaboration

The multi-country approach connects stakeholders working on similar transparency and accountability challenges across Nigeria, Ghana, Mozambique, and the DRC, supporting shared learning and approaches.

08

Strengthened accountability in the clean-energy transition

The initiative contributes to efforts to ensure that growing demand for critical minerals is accompanied by stronger transparency, integrity, and accountability throughout the mineral value chain.
