Deepening Methane Emissions Transparency Initiative – Stream II

Background

Methane is a potent greenhouse gas with significant implications for climate change, public health, and environmental sustainability. Despite its importance, limited access to emissions data and weak public understanding of methane emissions can constrain citizens’ and civil society organisations’ ability to demand transparency and accountability from relevant stakeholders.

The Deepening Methane Emissions Transparency Initiative – Stream II was implemented to strengthen citizen and youth engagement in methane emissions accountability by improving access to relevant data, building advocacy capacity, and providing practical tools for community-level storytelling and evidence-based advocacy.

Project Objective

The project aimed to strengthen the capacity of young people and communities to use methane emissions data and digital tools to promote transparency, public participation, and accountability around methane emissions and related environmental issues.

Key Activities

The project delivered three major interventions:

1. Training of Youth Advocates:
   Twenty (20) youth advocates were trained on the use of the Emissions Monitoring and Accountability Tracker (EMAT) platform. The training equipped participants with practical knowledge and skills to access, interpret, and use methane emissions data to support data-driven accountability advocacy.

2. Development and Launch of Community Storytelling Toolkit:
   A Community Storytelling Toolkit was developed and launched to help communities document, communicate, and amplify stories around methane emissions and their environmental and social impacts. The toolkit provides practical guidance for transforming community experiences and evidence into compelling stories that can support advocacy and public engagement.

3. Production of Video Tutorial:
   A video tutorial was produced to demonstrate how to use the Community Storytelling Toolkit. The tutorial provides a practical and accessible guide that enables users to understand and apply the toolkit independently.

Key Outputs

• 20 youth advocates trained on the use of the EMAT platform for data-driven accountability advocacy.

• A Community Storytelling Toolkit developed and launched.

• A video tutorial produced to support the use and application of the Community Storytelling Toolkit.

Expected Outcomes

The project is expected to contribute to stronger youth participation in environmental accountability initiatives, improved ability to use methane emissions data for advocacy, and increased capacity among communities and civil society actors to document and communicate methane-related issues effectively.

Ultimately, the initiative seeks to contribute to a more informed and engaged citizenry capable of using evidence, community experiences, and digital tools to demand greater transparency and accountability in methane emissions management.
